“Knowledge = tolerance” Educational workshops for students in primary and secondary schools
.
The project Knowledge=tolerance aims to confront prejudices, stereotypes, discrimination, xenophobia and anti-Semitism among primary and high school students in Serbia.
The educational sessions and activities include subjects about Jewish life and culture, Holocaust education, anti-Semitism and discrimination designed in the spirit of anti-prejudice and diversity education.
During activities, which use the methodology of informal education, special emphasis is put on the teachings around Holocaust, in order to demonstrate the dangers of prejudice, discrimination, and anti-Semitism.
Goals of educational sessions are to facilitate dialogue and the sharing of experiences in the areas of religion and culture, to recognize, respect, and understand religious, cultural, gender and identity diversity; to confront prejudice and discrimination, and to develop individual skills for creating inclusive intercultural environments. The mission of the project is to encourage and empower students to actively participate in creating a more educated, tolerant, open, and responsible society.
Workshops in school.
Ever since the organization was established, numerous workshops in schools took place all around Serbia. Schools were offered few options for workshop’s topics. Three major topics covered were in connection with Jewish tradition and culture: Discrimination, Anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust. Team of Haver Serbia went to schools and delivered workshops on the topic chosen by teachers. Each workshop lasted one (45 minutes) or two school classes. During the school year of 2016-2017, more than 2500 students in 17 cities around Serbia participated in these school workshops.
Educational tours around Staro Sajmište (Judenlager Semlin). After the set of workshops around Holocaust, for teachers that choose to take their classes outside of school we organize educational tours around concentration camp in the center of Belgrade.
Organizing commemorational programs in partnership with schools
International Holocaust Remembrance Day – in cooperation with three high schools in Belgrade, Haver Srbija organizes this event for community members and for the general society. Around 50 students are involved in an educational process during which they learn about local Holocaust history, meet with the survivors, visit the concentration camp in Belgrade and produce materials for the exhibition and performance delivered on international and local days marking Holocaust.
